Dr. Michael Barta is a preeminent expert in the neuroscientific and emotionally healing treatment of sex and porn addiction. His groundbreaking, research-based approach to recovery has helped thousands of men return to living as their authentic selves.
Dr. Barta has been working with addictions since 1986. And has been specializing in treating sex and sexually compulsive sexual behaviors since 2008.
Dr. Barta has been where you are and knows the way out.
In his work, he quickly recognized that the current treatments being offered to treat sexual addiction are based on a model that treats alcohol and drug addiction. These addictions are not the same.
He recognized this approach was highly prone to recidivism because it dealt only with symptoms. In the case of sex and porn, the secret behaviors are also easy to hide in getting “high,” especially in a digital age where infinite pornographic gratification is a mouse click or an icon tap away.
Starting in 2008, Dr. Barta focused on treating the intimacy disorder that drives compulsive sexual behavior. He also founded the Begin Again Institute, a treatment center for helping men heal and recover from compulsive sexual behavior.
Dr. Barta left Begin Again Institute in 2021 and hasn’t been associated with the institution since that time.
Between 2011 and 2015, Dr. Barta developed and finalized what would become his revolutionary treatment model and published book, TINSA® A Neurological Approach to the Treatment of Sex Addiction (2017).
In the book, he explains his neuroscientific approach to identifying and treating sex and porn addiction according to trauma sustained in specific regions of the brain and nervous system.
His previous work was valuable in showing people how their brain and nervous system were changed. Now, his new and expanded work — the Reconnection model — specifically focuses on healing these changes, based on the most current neurobiological research available.
In his new work, he shows that long-term healing from a sex or porn addiction cannot be achieved by cold stoppage and will power alone. Rather, a person must return to and heal what changed their brain and autonomic nervous system in order to find true recovery and genuine connection.
Where there is a sex or porn addiction, previous trauma is almost always directly behind it. The goal of identifying the trauma during recovery is not to blame those who might be responsible, but rather to locate the sources of disconnection and heal them so that true connection – true intimacy – can return.
Today, Dr. Barta continues applying cutting-edge neuroscience in supporting men in recovery from sex and porn addiction through his 5-day men’s treatment program based on his new Reconnection Intensives™ model.
